The Office of the First Lady of Nigeria has addressed the social media circulation of a video showing student chants during her recent visit to Delta State, emphasizing the need for fairness and understanding in handling the matter.

The incident occurred on March 25, 2025, at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba, during the Renewed Hope Initiative’s donation of 10,000 professional kits to midwives in the South-South zone. The program was aimed at motivating midwives across the nation to reduce infant and maternal mortality.

In a statement signed by Busola Kukoyi, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the First Lady, the office expressed gratitude for the warm reception from the Delta State Government, the people of Delta State, midwives, nurses, women groups, and student nurses at the event.

However, attention has been drawn to a clip from the event showing students of the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences engaging in a playful chant while welcoming the First Lady. The statement acknowledged that the students expressed themselves in a “spontaneous and jovial manner” and noted reports that some students have since received queries from their institution over the chants.

While respecting the right of institutions to uphold discipline, the First Lady’s Office emphasized the importance of creating a safe space for student expression while maintaining decorum.

“The First Lady’s visit was intended to inspire and uplift healthcare professionals, and it is our hope that this event remains a positive and motivating experience for all involved,” the statement read.

The Office of the First Lady further urged the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences to handle the situation with fairness and understanding, ensuring that students continue to thrive in an environment that promotes both discipline and free expression.
