As the world marks the 2025 International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) under the theme “Stepping Up the Pace: Strengthening Alliances and Building Movements to End FGM,” Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, has reiterated the urgent need to protect the rights and dignity of girls and women by eliminating the harmful practice.

In a statement commemorating the day, the First Lady described FGM as a human rights violation with no health benefits, stressing that the practice has devastating physical and psychological consequences for its victims.

According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Nigeria has the highest absolute number of FGM cases globally, with over 20 million women and girls affected. If urgent action is not taken, an estimated 14 million more girls in the country remain at risk by 2030.

While acknowledging the progress made through collaborative efforts involving the government, UNFPA/UNICEF Joint Programme, civil society, and community leaders, Senator Tinubu emphasized that more work is needed to completely eradicate the practice.

“We must remember that violence against women is not just a women’s issue but an issue against humanity. It affects us all, eroding our shared values of respect and dignity,” she said.

She urged stakeholders to intensify advocacy, build stronger partnerships, and empower survivors, noting that young people and women must take the lead in the fight against FGM.

She reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to ending the practice, pledging her continued advocacy for necessary policies and support.

“Our collective voice is our greatest strength. With united efforts, we can achieve a Nigeria free from FGM,” she stated.

As the global movement against FGM gains momentum, the First Lady called on all Nigerians to work together for the safety, dignity, and future of women and girls, ensuring that FGM becomes a thing of the past.
