President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, on their remarkable achievement of reaching the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket for the fifth consecutive time, following a hard-fought 75–68 victory over Senegal.
The President commended the resilience and dominance of the reigning champions, who have now defeated their Senegalese rivals for the seventh time, with their latest win recorded at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
Describing the encounter as “the final before the final,” President Tinubu lauded the team not just for their semi-final victory but also for securing a spot at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments, scheduled for March 2026.
“I have observed the discipline, focus, and team spirit consistently displayed by D’Tigress throughout this tournament—qualities that have brought honour to our nation and earned respect for our players and coaches worldwide,” President Tinubu said.
He offered special praise to head coach Rena Wakama, the first woman to lead the team, noting that her leadership and experience—both as a former player and now from the bench—have continued to inspire the squad to new heights in the sport.
The President assured D’Tigress of his continued support as they aim to clinch a fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and a seventh overall.
