Following a failed attempt to sign Swedish striker Victor Gyökeres, Manchester United have turned their attention back to Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen, as they continue their search for a proven goalscorer this summer.
The Red Devils had previously explored a deal for Osimhen but were reportedly put off by his high wage demands. Their efforts to sign other targets, including Liam Delap and Gyökeres, have also fallen through, prompting a return to negotiations with the Napoli frontman.
According to FootMercato, United have now reopened talks with Napoli and have already discussed a potential transfer fee and salary package for Osimhen. The Premier League giants are reportedly willing to offer the 26-year-old a €12 million (£10.2 million) annual salary and are prepared to pay Napoli €75 million (£63.8 million) including bonuses.
While that figure is slightly below the €78.9 million (£67.2 million) Napoli paid to sign Osimhen from Lille in 2020, it would still represent one of United’s biggest investments in recent years. Since arriving in Italy, Osimhen has scored 76 goals and registered 18 assists in 133 appearances across all competitions.
He was instrumental in Napoli’s 2022/23 Serie A title win, netting 26 goals in 32 league games. However, tensions with the club’s hierarchy led to his exclusion from Antonio Conte’s plans, and he was subsequently loaned to Galatasaray, where he flourished with 37 goals and eight assists in 41 appearances last season.
Galatasaray are also interested in making the move permanent, but Osimhen has reportedly ruled out a big-money switch to Saudi side Al Hilal, keeping the door open for a Premier League move.
Liverpool have also been linked with the striker, but Manchester United now appear to be making a serious push to finally land their long-term target.
