The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State is advocating a consensus strategy ahead of the party’s chairmanship primaries slated for Saturday, May 10.
This position was strongly supported by the Chairman of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Prince Tajudeen Olusi, who led other party stakeholders during a strategic meeting held at the party’s secretariat in Acme, Ogba.
Party leaders encouraged chairmanship aspirants to engage in dialogue among themselves and agree on a consensus candidate to represent the APC in the forthcoming local government elections.
Prince Olusi said the consensus option is aimed at preventing potential conflicts that may arise from an indirect primary. He noted that during his political career, he had once stepped down for another aspirant in the interest of party unity, emphasizing the importance of respecting party supremacy.
Speaking at the event, APC State Chairman, Hon. Cornelius Ojelabi, noted that all eyes are on Lagos and warned that the party must avoid any actions that could tarnish its image. He urged aspirants and their supporters to conduct themselves in a way that would make the President proud of the outcome.
Hon. Ojelabi further appealed to the aspirants to prioritize peace and not treat the primary as a do-or-die affair.
Chairman of the APC Electoral Committee, Barr. Babatunde Ogala, also addressed the gathering, urging all aspirants to strictly follow the party’s electoral guidelines. He emphasized that only one agent will be allowed per aspirant on election day, warning that any aspirant who shows up with a crowd will be disqualified.
The Lagos APC primary election is scheduled to take place at the party’s Acme secretariat in Ogba.
More than 400 aspirants are in the race for the party’s chairmanship tickets across 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) ahead of the July 12 local council polls.
