A former councillorship aspirant in Oshodi Isolo Local Government Area of Lagos State, Elias Adebara Idris, popularly known as “Alooma,” has called for peaceful and violence free elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Idris made the appeal in a statement made available to journalists.
He urged residents of Lagos State, particularly those in Oshodi, to come out en masse to exercise their constitutional right to vote during the elections, stressing that citizens should not allow fear or intimidation to deprive them of participating in the democratic process.
Alooma also cautioned political actors and their supporters against hate speech, inflammatory comments and all forms of intimidation capable of undermining the credibility and peaceful conduct of the elections.
He condemned the killings recorded during the recent Osun State governorship election, describing the loss of lives during elections as unacceptable and a threat to Nigeria’s democratic development.
According to him, those found culpable for electoral violence and other criminal acts should be identified and appropriately sanctioned in accordance with the law, irrespective of their political affiliations.
The former APC aspirant further called on Nigerian youths to take ownership of the electoral process, urging them to move beyond social media engagements and actively participate in the physical processes that determine the country’s political leadership.
He stressed that the youth constitute a significant segment of the electorate and should play a responsible role in ensuring peaceful, credible and transparent elections.
Idris urged political parties, candidates, security agencies, electoral officials and voters to work collectively towards ensuring that the 2027 general elections are conducted in an atmosphere of peace, tolerance and respect for democratic values.
He maintained that elections should be a platform for citizens to freely choose their leaders rather than an avenue for violence, intimidation or loss of lives.
