The Executive Chairman of Mosan-Okunola Local Council Development Area, Hon. Akindele Adunni Opeyemi, has reeled out the achievements of her administration in education, healthcare, infrastructure, environmental management, social protection and youth empowerment.
Adunni listed the interventions on Friday while speaking at the Year 2027 Stakeholders Budget Consultative Forum held at the council’s Secretariat Multipurpose Hall, where she also unveiled the administration’s priorities for the coming fiscal year.
The forum was attended by the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Abdulhameed Ayodele Alawaye; councillors, supervisors, special advisers; Chief of Staff to the Chairman, Hon. Tolutope Falope; Council Manager, Mr. Joseph Abiodun; the Council Treasurer, Mrs. Tayo Edun; NULGE representatives and other members of the management team.
Also present were the pioneer chairman of the LCDA, Chief Abel Badejo; Apex Leader, Alhaji Yisa Yusuff; party chairman, Hon. Dayo Osinowo; Engr. The chairman said the consultative forum was not merely a statutory requirement but an avenue for the administration to deepen inclusive governance by allowing residents and other stakeholders to determine the needs and priorities to be captured in the 2027 budget.
Reviewing the council’s performance, Adunni said the administration had responded to several requests and recommendations made by stakeholders at previous budget consultations, resulting in interventions across key sectors.
In education, she said the council revived its Annual Spelling Bee and provided learning materials and Back-to-School Packs containing school bags, uniforms, exercise books, water bottles and other educational materials to pupils.
She said classrooms had also been renovated, while sick bay and crèche facilities were constructed and learning materials provided for the council’s Adult Literacy Programme.
According to her, more than 1,000 indigent students seeking admission into tertiary institutions had benefited from the council’s provision of free JAMB and GCE forms.
On healthcare, Adunni said the council had renovated Primary Health Centres and organised free medical outreaches, while the Senator Oluremi Tinubu PHC at Akiogun had been rehabilitated as part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery.
She added that the Staff Clinic had been renovated and supplied with drugs, while the council raised ₦17 million to support the medical treatment of Master Alfred, who was facing kidney-related health challenges.
The chairman said the council had equally invested in infrastructure through the construction and rehabilitation of inner roads, including the former Boys Town Road, now named Adunni Akindele Road, and the Dual Carriage 2nd Avenue.
She said drainage systems had been constructed to tackle flooding, while solar street lights were installed to improve security and night-time movement. The council secretariat, she added, was the first beneficiary of the initiative tagged “Light Up Mosan-Okunola”.
Adunni also disclosed that a 50KVA generator had been procured for the council.
On environmental sustainability and social protection, the chairman said the council had sustained its monthly sanitation exercise, embarked on drainage clearance and tree planting, and intensified sensitisation on proper waste management.
She said the administration had also extended financial assistance and palliatives to widows, elderly persons and persons living with disabilities through its Renewed Hope Cash Empowerment Programme.
Speaking on youth development, Adunni said the council recently presented certificates of participation to 150 young people trained in Digital Fashion Illustration and Digital Marketing.
She added that tools and start-up equipment had been procured for graduates of the council’s Catering and Hospitality, Adire and Fashion Design programmes to enable them establish businesses, create jobs and become financially independent.
According to her, the administration’s approach to youth empowerment was designed not only to provide skills but also to help young people become employers of labour and active contributors to economic development.
Presenting the council’s 2027 budget direction, Adunni said the proposed budget had been tagged “Budget of Consolidation and People’s Welfare”, with emphasis on five key pillars: infrastructure renewal; education and human capital development; health and social welfare; youth and women empowerment and job creation; and security and the environment.
She said the council would prioritise road rehabilitation, drainage construction and street lighting across its seven wards based on identified needs, while sustaining its educational interventions and renovating more primary schools.
The chairman also said the council planned to upgrade its Primary Health Centres towards 24-hour service delivery, expand skills acquisition programmes, support small businesses and market development, strengthen ICT training for youths and provide additional security logistics.
She urged the stakeholders to identify areas requiring urgent government attention in their communities, assuring them that all submissions would be documented in a communiqué and reflected in the council’s budget proposal to the Legislative Arm.
The stakeholders subsequently presented their various needs and demands, including requests for improved roads, healthcare services, market development, youth empowerment, community infrastructure, security and other interventions to be captured in the council’s 2027 budget.
