As the 2025 Local Government elections draw closer, the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has released the official qualifications for individuals aspiring to contest for Chairmanship and Councillorship positions across the state’s 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
The announcement follows the recent unveiling of the election timetable by the Commission, setting the stage for intensified political activities at the grassroots level.
Requirements for Chairmanship Aspirants
To contest for the office of Local Government Chairman, an aspirant must meet the following constitutional and electoral conditions:
• Must be a Nigerian citizen
• Must be at least 30 years old
• Must possess a minimum of a School Certificate (WASSCE) or its equivalent
• Must be a registered member of a political party and sponsored by that party
All listed conditions must be satisfied in full for eligibility.
Requirements for Councillorship Aspirants
For individuals vying for a seat as a Councillor in any ward, the eligibility criteria include:
• Must be a Nigerian citizen
• Must be at least 25 years old
• Must possess a minimum of a School Certificate (WASSCE) or its equivalent
• Must be a registered member of a political party and sponsored by that party
