Manchester City’s impressive 32-match unbeaten run in the Premier League was halted by a 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday, allowing Liverpool to leapfrog them to the top of the table.
The Cherries struck on either side of halftime with goals from Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson, while Josko Gvardiol’s late header offered City a glimmer of hope.
Already dealing with injuries, City came into the match on the heels of their first season loss to Tottenham in the League Cup.
Semenyo opened the scoring in the 9th minute, spinning onto Milos Kerkez’s cross, and Evanilson added a second just after the hour mark.
Gvardiol’s powerful header from an Ilkay Gundogan cross brought City within reach eight minutes from time, but Erling Haaland missed a chance to equalize in stoppage time, hitting the post from close range.
City now sits two points behind Liverpool, who came from behind to beat Brighton 2-1 at Anfield. Despite the setback, the damage was limited as title contenders Arsenal also fell, losing 1-0 at Newcastle.
