Former Chairman of Ikoyi-Obalende Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Fuad Atanda-Lawal, has taken a bold step in advancing education in Lagos State with the groundbreaking of the reconstruction of Army Children’s School and Dodan Barracks Primary School in Obalende.
Driven by his passion for community development and quality education, Atanda-Lawal, through the FAL Foundation, initiated the project to provide a more conducive learning environment for pupils in the area.
Speaking at the ceremony, Atanda-Lawal said the idea was conceived to ensure that children within the community are well-positioned to access quality basic education, regardless of prevailing challenges.
Reflecting on his personal connection to the project, he disclosed that he was once a pupil of the school about 38 years ago, a factor that further inspired his commitment to giving back and improving the standard of infrastructure available to current and future learners.
He noted that with the growing demands on local governments, it has become necessary for well-meaning individuals and stakeholders to complement government efforts in delivering critical social infrastructure.
According to him, the project—being executed free of charge by Ridgewell Construction—is part of broader efforts to empower residents, uplift educational standards, and contribute meaningfully to societal growth.
Atanda-Lawal also called on residents and stakeholders to support the current administration in Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA, emphasizing the need for continuity and collective responsibility in governance.
Dignitaries at the event commended the former council boss for his rare gesture, describing the initiative as a demonstration of selfless service and a model for post-office leadership.
The Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), Mr. Hakeem Babatunde Shittu, lauded the initiative, noting that it reflects genuine commitment to the development of the education sector. He added that such interventions complement government efforts and reaffirm the state’s openness to meaningful collaboration.
Other speakers, including government officials and military representatives, described the project as impactful and timely, stressing that it will significantly improve learning conditions for pupils and benefit surrounding communities.
The reconstruction project, which will feature modern educational facilities, is expected to be completed within 18 months and will also serve neighboring schools within the area.
