The Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems has commenced the registration of farmers operating in the state under the Produce for Lagos Programme.
According to a statement signed by Ms. Abisola Olusanya, Honourable Commissioner Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, the program is a strategic initiative designed to boost food production for the Lagos market through structured off-take agreements. “With a population of over 24 million residents and rapid urban growth, Lagos remains the single largest consumer of food in Nigeria.
“Under this initiative, farmers will gain direct access to a secured market where their produce will be purchased at guaranteed prices. This arrangement is expected to reduce risks associated with quality and volume fluctuations, promote price stability for consumers, and increase farmers’ incomes.
“In addition, the programme will expand opportunities for inter-state agricultural trade, improve logistics and distribution networks, and strengthen the state’s food supply chain.
“The initiative focuses on increasing food production within Lagos while also building strategic partnerships with farmers in major food-producing states across the country. By enrolling, farmers will be integrated into a central database that will serve as the foundation for planning, interventions, and the delivery of support services,” she stated.
