Nigeria’s Super Falcons pulled off a sensational comeback to defeat Morocco 3–2 in a pulsating Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) showdown on Saturday.
Morocco drew first blood early, with Ghizlane Chebbak striking in the 12th minute, followed by Sanaâ Mssoudy’s clinical finish in the 24th, giving the Atlas Lionesses a commanding 2–0 lead.
But the second half belonged to the Super Falcons.
Esther Okoronkwo ignited Nigeria’s fightback with a well-taken penalty in the 64th minute. Just seven minutes later, Folashade Florence Ijamilusi smashed in the equalizer to level the tie at 2–2.
The dramatic turnaround was sealed in the 88th minute when Jennifer Echegini buried the winner, capping a spirited Nigerian performance.
Statistically, Nigeria edged Morocco with 14 shots (five on target), 55% ball possession, and five corners to Morocco’s three. The Super Falcons completed 280 passes at a 69% accuracy rate.
Despite the fierce contest, the game remained clean—no cards were issued. Nigeria committed seven fouls, while Morocco had 12.
With grit, heart, and firepower, the Super Falcons proved once again why they remain Africa’s queens of the pitch.
