In commemoration of World Mental Health Day, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, has called for increased attention to mental health, particularly in workplace settings.
This year’s global theme, “It’s Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace,” resonates with current challenges faced by many employees, according to the First Lady.
In her statement, Senator Tinubu noted that dissatisfaction in the workplace, stemming from a variety of reasons, can significantly impact one’s mental wellbeing.
She stressed that bottled-up emotions are often the root of mental health struggles, urging for an environment where individuals feel safe to speak openly about their challenges without fear of stigmatization.
“If there were no fears of stigmatization, people would tend to speak openly about their struggles, thus leading to early diagnosis and improving recovery outcomes,” she stated.
The First Lady emphasized the importance of love and support, both within and outside of the workplace, in mitigating mental health issues.
She called on individuals to commit to raising awareness about mental health and to encourage early intervention through medical help and counseling.
“Let us all commit to improving mental health awareness and enjoin individuals to seek medical help and counseling early. Please be your brother’s keeper for a safer society,” she added.
Senator Tinubu’s remarks align with global efforts to reduce mental health challenges and promote well-being in workplaces, particularly in the face of modern stressors and pressures.
World Mental Health Day is marked annually on October 10th, and this year’s theme underscores the need for supportive and mentally healthy workplaces.
