As as Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu signs Bill to deepen accountability and transparency in governance, a renowned activist and public affairs commentator, Comrade Razaq Olokoba has expressed excitement, saying, “it is in line with the mantra of our organization.”
Olokoba, who is the National Convener, Campaign for Dignity in Governance (CDG), an anti-graft group with over 70 other human rights organizations across the country and beyond in a media chat in Lagos Wednesday said, “the Law is a right step towards the right direction.”
Speaking further, the vocal political observer and social analyst commended the governor for his initiative towards deepening the culture of accountability and transparency in the state’s spending, describing the establishment of an anti-corruption commission in the State as “a welcome idea from a credible administrator.”
Recall that Governor Sanwo-Olu assented to Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission Bill of 2021, sponsored by the executive arm of the Government after it was passed by the House of Assembly at a brief ceremony held in Alausa.
Olokoba expressed the delight that, now that the legislation has come into force, the anti-corruption commission, which is backed by the instrument of law, would allow for investigate and prosecute officials of the State Government and registered contractors indicted for economic crimes and financial misappropriation and thereby lead to dignity and accountability in governance.
According to the right advocate, the step taken by Governor Sanwo-Olu is in tandem “with our organization’s stand on transparent dealing in public service,” adding that, “his action is a clear testimony that his administration’s effort towards entrenching probity, accountability and transparency in governance.”
Olokoba praised the governor for walking his talk according to his electioneering promise that his government, “would be accountable and responsible in the appropriation of the State’s resources to be able to stand in front of the citizens to give account on how public funds are being managed judiciously.”
The proposed commission, the activist stated further that, it would also promote dialogue among public officers to keep the trust of the people in the discharge of their official responsibilities in line with transparency in addition to ensuring accountability of public funds and responsibility of public office.
He therefore enjoined the good people of the state and beyond to support the governor to succeed in his efforts at sanitising the system through the commission, enthusing that, “with this latest development, Sanwo-Olu would score another plus in accountability, probity and transparency.”
