Nigeria’s Afrobeats heavyweights — Wizkid, Tems, Rema and Asake — have earned nominations in the Favourite Afrobeats Artiste category at the 2025 American Music Awards (AMAs), alongside South African sensation and Grammy-winner, Tyla.
Introduced in 2022, the category was first won by Wizkid, highlighting Afrobeats’ surging global influence. The 2025 edition of the AMAs will be broadcast live from Las Vegas on May 26.
This year’s ceremony is set to be the biggest yet with three new categories making their debut: Song of the Year, Album of the Year, and Social Song of the Year. Pop icon Jennifer Lopez returns as host after a decade-long break since her 2015 appearance.
Leading the nomination pack is rap titan Kendrick Lamar with 10 nods, including Artiste of the Year, Album of the Year for GNX, and Song of the Year for Not Like Us. He also dominates the Favourite Hip-Hop Song category with three entries: “Like That” featuring Future and Metro Boomin, “Not Like Us,” and “Luther” featuring SZA.
Post Malone follows with eight nominations, while Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, and Shaboozey each scored seven. Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, Morgan Wallen, Sabrina Carpenter, SZA, and Taylor Swift each clinched six.
Rising star Chappell Roan made history as the only artist nominated in all three new categories.
