Fresh reports indicate that former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, and former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, are in discussions to defect to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sources also reveal that former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, ex-Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Adamu, and several former ministers from President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration—alongside some disgruntled members of the All Progressives Congress (APC)—are considering a move to the SDP.
This development comes amid intensified talks of a major opposition coalition aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu and the APC in 2027.
Insiders suggest that the coalition will likely include Atiku Abubakar’s faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi’s faction of the Labour Party (LP), and former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who recently joined the SDP.
The opposition groups are reportedly exploring the possibility of uniting under an already registered political platform.
However, if consensus on a common platform proves difficult, they may collectively align with the SDP as an alternative.
Confirming the ongoing discussions, former PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, stated that merger talks among opposition politicians have been progressing well.
Speaking on AIT’s Focus program, he assured that opposition leaders would soon unveil a strategy capable of restoring hope to Nigerians.
Ologbondiyan further asserted that with the current level of political realignment, defeating the ruling APC in 2027 would be a much easier task.
