The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, has issued an arrest warrant for the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), following his failure to appear before the lawmakers.
The warrant was issued on Monday during plenary after Enebeli ignored a 72-hour ultimatum to present himself before the Assembly.
Lawmakers are seeking to probe his role in the annulled local government elections conducted on October 5, 2024, which the Supreme Court recently invalidated.
Enebeli has since fixed August 9, 2025, for fresh local government elections in the state, in line with the court ruling.
However, the Assembly insists on scrutinizing his handling of the previous election before moving forward.
Meanwhile, Governor Siminalayi Fubara over the weekend invited Assembly members to a dialogue on implementing the Supreme Court’s verdict.
The apex court had ruled against Fubara, affirming the legitimacy of the Amaewhule-led Assembly and directing it to resume legislative activities immediately.
In a separate ruling, the Supreme Court also barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other financial institutions from releasing funds to the Rivers State Government until it complies with court orders.
The political crisis in Rivers continues to deepen as both factions wrestle for control of the state’s governance structure.
