The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to rebuilding the healthcare sector in Nigeria.

She made this statement during the 25th-anniversary celebration of the National Hospital Abuja.

Senator Tinubu highlighted the critical role the hospital plays in the development of the healthcare sector, describing it as pivotal to achieving a better healthcare system for Nigerians.

“Every Nigerian deserves quality healthcare, regardless of their background or circumstances. The Federal Government, under the able leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is committed to rebuilding the healthcare system in Nigeria. Therefore, the National Hospital Abuja plays a vital role in ensuring that all Nigerians have access to quality and affordable healthcare,” she said.

Looking ahead, she encouraged the hospital’s staff and management to remain resilient and strive for excellence in their service delivery.

“As we look to the future, I urge the members of staff and management of this great hospital to remain resilient and strive for excellence so that you can continue to positively impact the lives of many who seek qualitative medical care.”

The First Lady emphasized the importance of investing in the health of Nigerians and called on stakeholders to reflect on their contributions and rededicate themselves to improving healthcare delivery.

She also paid tribute to Hajia Maryam Abacha, the former First Lady, whose vision under the Family Support Programme (FSP) led to the establishment of the hospital.

“The establishment of this facility would not have been possible without the foresight of former First Lady Hajia Maryam Abacha, whose vision under her National Programme, the Family Support Programme (FSP), birthed the idea that led to the establishment of a national hospital for Women and Children. In 1999, the mandate of the hospital was expanded to serve as an apex referral hospital for all Nigerians and was renamed the National Hospital Abuja,” she said.

In honor of the anniversary, Senator Tinubu announced that the hospital’s Radiotherapy Centre would be named the Mariam Abacha Radiotherapy Centre.

She also commended the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate; the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital Abuja, Prof. Muhammad Raji; and all hospital staff for their dedication to improving healthcare and the well-being of Nigerians.

Earlier, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, noted that the health sector is undergoing a significant overhaul aimed at positioning it for greater effectiveness in the near future.

The Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, Prof. Muhammad Raji, added that the hospital is now poised to become a referral hub for Africa.

As part of the event, the First Lady commissioned the Radiotherapy Centre and planted trees to commemorate her visit to the medical facility.
