The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) secured wins in 15 of Abia State’s 17 Local Government Areas during the local government elections held on November 2, while the Young Progressive Party (YPP) emerged victorious in the remaining two LGAs.
The results were declared by Prof. George Chima, Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), at the commission’s headquarters in Umuahia on Saturday.
Reflecting on the election, Chima stated, “We have fulfilled the duty we were appointed to carry out on September 5. It was a challenging task, but we worked diligently to boost election awareness across the state.”
He highlighted the significance of this election, noting, “For the first time in recent history, over 12 political parties participated, marking a milestone for the commission.”
Chima confirmed that the election was conducted in all 17 LGAs, describing it as “free, fair, and credible.”
He commended the commission’s efficiency, saying, “We managed to complete a task that usually takes six to twelve months in just two months.”
In his remarks, Chima congratulated both the winning and opposition parties, stressing the importance of maintaining peace in Abia.
“In every election, there are winners and losers, but the priority is that Abia remains peaceful. I urge everyone to uphold this peace,” he said.
Chima also expressed gratitude to security agencies for their support and praised political parties for “playing by the rules.”
