Tensions flared early Sunday morning when Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, arrived at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) collation centre in Benin, where the final results of the Edo State governorship election were being tallied.
Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by the party’s deputy governorship candidate, Dennis Idahosa, objected to Obaseki’s presence, claiming he had no legitimate reason to be there.
In a heated protest, Idahosa shouted, “Obaseki must leave. He has no business here. He’s not an INEC official. The Nigeria Police should not compromise.”
Protesters were seen banging on the gate as security agents barred them from entering the premises.
With 98.23% of polling unit results already uploaded to INEC’s IREV portal, it remains unclear who will emerge victorious between the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Asue Ighodalo, and the APC’s Monday Okpebholo.
