A pro-democracy organization, Campaign for Dignity in Governance (CDG) has warned detractors to stop blaming Lagos State government for doing the right thing over keeping the environment safe in line with universal standard, asserting that, abolition of street trading is in conformity with the global standard.
The organization in a press release weekend by its Convener and National President, Comrade Razaq Olokoba said, “apart from serving as a recruitment ground for hoodlums, it’s also an avenue for child abuse,” urging that government should be supported to put an end to such anti social conduct.
According to Olokoba, the steps Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is taking to sanitize Lagos is in order condemning the way some individuals and groups are hiding under freedom of speech in democracy to pamper wrong doers rather than discourage them.
Olokoba observed that none of all the structures the government sealed up or sanctioned passed credibility test and so should be made to be in conformity with the acceptable standard for the safety and comfort of all and sundry.
“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has promised us a better second term. And we are of the conviction that he has our cooperation with him in mind to make it a reality.
“Against this background, it is incumbent on all the well-meaning people in the state and beyond to assist him to serve us well,” the group advised.
Concluding, the statement supported that, “Street trading should be abolished because it is a universal declaration. It is one of the recruitment ground for Child Labour and
Child Labour is responsible for a higher percentage of school drop out. Nigeria has one of the highest records for school drop out.
“Street trading is a buffer for criminals operating on our road.
“All the structures of the market closed failed integrity test and sanitation compliance. Our city should be prevented from being tagged the most contaminated city in television documentaries and closing the offending markets is part of the measures to prevent that.”
