The Lagos State Government has released ₦40 million in financial support to the families and dependants of deceased officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), in a move aimed at honouring their sacrifice and reaffirming the state’s commitment to the welfare of public servants.
The disbursement, coordinated by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, took place at the LASTMA Headquarters in Oshodi. A total of 20 families benefited from the exercise, with each receiving ₦2 million as consolatory assistance.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Giwa stressed that the gesture was not intended as compensation for the loss of life, noting that no financial support can equate to the value of a human life.
He explained that the intervention was designed to acknowledge the courage, dedication and ultimate sacrifice of LASTMA officers who died while serving the state.
He assured the families that the Lagos State Government would continue to recognise and preserve the legacies of the fallen officers, adding that the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains firmly committed to people-focused governance and the welfare of workers and their dependants.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Olawale Musa, commended the initiative, describing it as a reflection of compassionate leadership.
He said the gesture strengthens confidence in government institutions and reassures serving officers that dedication to duty will always be recognised and honoured.
In his welcome address, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the deceased officers as selfless patriots whose commitment and professionalism would continue to inspire the agency.
He thanked Governor Sanwo-Olu for sustaining a governance culture that places high value on human dignity and institutional loyalty.
Adding an emotional voice to the occasion, the wife of the pioneer General Manager of LASTMA, late Engr. Adebayo Adegboayega Coker, urged the beneficiaries to invest the funds wisely in the education and welfare of their children, whom she described as the enduring legacy of the fallen officers.
Responding on behalf of the families, the wife of late Adeyemo Rotimi expressed deep appreciation to Governor Sanwo-Olu for his empathy and reassurance, noting that the gesture has provided comfort and a sense of belonging to the bereaved families.
