Following Marcelino Garcia Toral’s resignation last week, Marseille has appointed Gennaro Gattuso as their new head coach.
Gattuso, a 45-year-old Italian, expressed his excitement, stating, “I am thrilled to join Marseille—a club and stadium, the Velodrome, where I had the chance to play and which is renowned across Europe for its passionate supporters.”
Gattuso brings experience from his previous managerial roles at AC Milan and Napoli, though he has been without a club since leaving Valencia earlier this year.
The former Italian World Cup winner had also been linked to Lyon, one of Marseille’s French rivals.
Marseille faced turmoil when Marcelino abruptly resigned after just seven competitive games in charge.
The situation escalated during a heated meeting between fan representatives and the club’s leadership, where threats and demands for resignations were made.
Club president Pablo Longoria initially considered leaving but ultimately decided to stay.
Currently, Marseille sits in eighth place in Ligue 1, having suffered a 4-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain.
They are also participating in this season’s Europa League and are set to host Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion in the upcoming match.
Gattuso’s inaugural match as coach will be against Monaco this Saturday.
