If our findings are anything to go by, several human right groups, various pro-democracy advocates and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), are already perfecting plans to storm every nook and cranny of Lagos State with huge and ground-shaking rallies to express excitements and delights over the reported endorsement of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.
This is sequel to the announcement of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), which is the Apex Lagos State political body of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Monday, April 18, endorsing incumbent governor Sanwo-Olu for a second term in office from 2023.
The announcement was made by the Council’s Secretary, Alhaji Mutiu Are, who was quoted to have said that the endorsement was hinged on the governor’s superlative achievement in office since 2019 that he mounted the governorship throne in the state.
It was against this background that, the activists arrived at their decision to paint the state red in appreciation of the GAC’s welcome decision.
Letting the cat out of the bag is a pan-Lagos indigenous organization, Egbe Omoluabi Eko (Egbe), that said, “the reported endorsement of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for a second term in office by the GAC calls for a huge celebration.”
According to its Convener, Ogbeni Ekundina Ibrahim, his members have commenced arrangements to hit the town with a big rally to give kudos to the highly revered members of the GAC for a job well done,” disclosing that, “signals have gone out to several right groups and pro-democracy organizations to get prepared for the grandmother of all rallies to show appreciation for the heart-warming decision that was being expected for long.”
When contacted for comments, National President, Campaign for Dignity in Governance (CDG), Comrade Razaq Olokoba said, “the decision is in line with our conviction that the governor’s performance has qualified him to go for a second term in office,” adding, “the decision is popular, acceptable, welcome and thoughtful and so, calls for celebration.”
Speaking in the same vein, leader of an all women Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), Women for Change Initiatives WFCI), Barrister Eyitope Success-Adekunle, also commended the Council in a statement for the decision, admitting that, “it was in line with the thoughts of the overwhelming population of the people of the state.”
Comrade Omolola Olukayode of the Movement for a Better Lagos, confirmed the move to hold a big rally to celebrate the endorsement, asking rhetorically, “or don’t you feel it calls for a big celebration?!”
We gather authoritatively that, the rallies are planned to happen before the official declaration by the governor with another mighty one on the very day of the declaration.
