…LemonLime Clean targets hospitals, PHCs, public toilets across Lagos

Nigerian entrepreneur and community advocate, Abiola Yahaya, will mark her 42nd birthday with a month-long hygiene and sanitation campaign across selected healthcare facilities and public spaces in Lagos State.

The initiative, tagged “LemonLime Clean 42 for 42 Hygiene & Health Campaign,” will be launched in October through LemonLime Nigeria Limited, owners of LemonLime Clean, with activities scheduled to hold every Friday throughout the month.

The campaign, themed “Clean Hands. Clean Spaces. Healthier Communities,” is aimed at promoting better hygiene practices, cleaner public environments and greater community ownership of sanitation.

Rather than holding a conventional birthday celebration, Yahaya said she decided to dedicate the milestone to a cause capable of creating a direct and lasting impact on the community.

The campaign will focus on selected maternity hospitals, primary healthcare centres and public toilets, combining hygiene sensitisation with practical cleaning interventions and the provision of appropriate hygiene products.

Among the proposed locations are Shomolu General Hospital, Sura Pry Health Centre, Simpson St. Pry Health, Ebute Metta, Oregun Primary Health Care Centre, Isale Oja Iloro Primary Health Care Centre and Ojodu Berger Public Toilet.

Explaining the motivation behind the initiative, Yahaya said turning 42 made her reflect on how she could use her birthday to give back to society.

“I have celebrated birthdays before, but turning 42 made me want to do something different. I began to ask myself what I could give back that would continue to matter beyond the celebration itself,” she said.

She said hygiene was chosen because it affects everyone, stressing that clean hands, toilets and healthcare environments could contribute significantly to the wellbeing of individuals and communities.

“I want my 42nd birthday to be remembered not simply as a celebration, but as a moment when we collectively chose to serve,” she added.

According to the organisers, the campaign will also provide opportunities for community engagement, hygiene education and conversations around everyday sanitation practices, particularly in public spaces with high human traffic.

Yahaya stressed that the initiative was not intended to replace government sanitation or public-health programmes, but to complement existing efforts.

“This is not about replacing what government is already doing. It is about adding our own small but meaningful contribution. Government cannot do everything alone, and private organisations and individuals cannot simply wait for government either. We all have a role to play in creating healthier communities,” she said.

The organisers said the campaign comes amid continuing concerns around environmental sanitation, public hygiene and preventive healthcare.

For Yahaya, however, the initiative goes beyond corporate social responsibility, describing it as a personal commitment to turn a significant birthday into an opportunity for service.

“Forty-two is not just a number for me. It is 42 years of life, lessons, relationships and blessings. I want to give something back,” she said.

She added that the campaign would have achieved its purpose if it resulted in cleaner healthcare facilities, better-equipped healthcare workers, improved hygiene habits among children or greater awareness of cleanliness within communities.

The campaign’s message is: “Clean Hands. Clean Spaces. Healthier Communities.”
