The Chairman of Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State, Mr. Lasisi Akinsanya, has showcased his administration’s achievements within the first 100 days of his second term, revealing extensive infrastructure development across the wards of the council.

Akinsanya made this known while leading a delegation of council officials and journalists on a media tour of completed and ongoing projects across the LCDA.

He explained that his administration deliberately prioritised projects that directly impact residents, stressing that people-centred governance remains the core of his policy direction.

According to the Igando-Ikotun LCDA Chairman, the projects are designed not only to enhance the social wellbeing of residents but also to stimulate economic activities within the communities.

“From the onset of this administration, our focus has been on improving infrastructure, strengthening social services and uplifting the quality of life of our people across all wards of the LCDA. We remain committed to transparency, accountability and inclusive governance,” Akinsanya said.

He noted that all the projects and interventions were executed within the last four to five months of his second term, describing them as a reflection of the renewed mandate given to his administration to deepen development, accelerate service delivery and positively impact more lives.

On infrastructure, Akinsanya said his administration initiated, facilitated and completed several strategic projects aimed at improving accessibility, controlling flooding and enhancing public safety. These include the complete renovation of Muri Olosunde/Fatimo Street in Ikotun with the installation of solar-powered streetlights to boost security and night-time visibility; ongoing drainage construction on Irepodun/Anuoluwapo Street, Igando, to address long-standing flooding challenges; and road rehabilitation works on Adeotan Street, Ikotun; Chris Bee Street, Igando; and Independence Way, Igando.

Other projects include: ongoing road construction with side drainage on Olanrewaju/Rabiat Akinsanya Street, Egan; a 1.3-kilometre road construction with double-side drainage on Lafunke Street, Ijegun; ongoing road construction on Itoki Street, Ikotun; facilitated road construction projects on Prince Adeyemi Street, Ikotun, and Old Egan Road, Akesan; as well as the rehabilitation of Alani Ige Street, Ikotun.

He also disclosed that the administration reconstructed drainage systems within the council secretariat and commenced the renovation of the Local Government Secretariat to create a more functional and befitting administrative environment.

Addressing the prolonged power outage in Santa Maria Community, Egan, Akinsanya said the council provided and installed a 500KVA transformer, restoring electricity and reviving socio-economic activities in the area.

On healthcare, the Chairman said service delivery has remained a major priority within the period under review. He disclosed that all Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across the LCDA have been rehabilitated to improve access to quality healthcare. Interventions include the installation of solar power at Akesan Primary Health Centre to ensure uninterrupted services, provision of a water tank to promote hygiene and environmental health, and free mammogram screening for women under the Women Cancer Awareness Initiative to promote early detection of breast cancer.

In the area of education, youth and social development, Akinsanya said the council implemented several impactful programmes, including a Spelling Bee Competition to promote literacy and academic excellence; distribution of free GCE forms to out-of-school students; distribution of free JAMB forms to eligible candidates; and free eye screening with the distribution of eyeglasses for children, in collaboration with Lions Club International.

Akinsanya further disclosed that six youths have been sponsored on tertiary education programmes through a tripartite arrangement involving the council, educational institutions and a private company, which will absorb the beneficiaries after graduation.

For him, it is always better to teach people how to fish rather than giving them pieces of fish to eat.

This belief necessitated his decision to train over 500 youths in various vocational skills, including catering and barbing, with assurances that beneficiaries will receive working tools and start-up capital upon completion of their training.

On social welfare and food security, Akinsanya said the council introduced a 50 per cent discounted food market to provide relief for residents amid current economic challenges, adding that the initiative would be sustained.

“These achievements, recorded within just four to five months of our second term in office, underscore our administration’s unwavering commitment to people-centred governance and accelerated grassroots development,” the Chairman said, noting further that his administration will not relent and rest on its oars, saying, “the reward for hard work is more work”.

Reacting to the achievements of the council Chairman, an okada rider on Alani Ige Street, Oreofe Akintokun, said the road had been in a deplorable condition for nearly 10 years before the intervention of the council administration.

“Construction of this road has brought huge relief to the residents. We are grateful to the Council Chairman. But for him, residents will still be waiting for succuor to come. But Akinsanya has really alleviated our sufferings,” the Okada rider said.

Similarly, the Chairman of the Ijegun Joint Community Development Association (CDA), Alhaji Olayemi Ashaka, expressed appreciation to the council chairman for the intervention on Lafunke Street. He noted that residents had endured the poor state of the road for many years, adding that the community was pleasantly surprised when the council undertook the project, as it was widely believed to be a state government responsibility.
