The Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Ahmed Alkali, has constituted a multi-stakeholder committee to investigate the train derailment that occurred on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at Jerre while a train was en route from Abuja to Kaduna.
The minister said the committee is mandated to identify the immediate and remote causes of the accident, recommend measures to prevent future occurrences, and propose strategies to enhance the safety and effectiveness of Nigeria’s rail transport system.
Expressing concern over the safety of passengers, Senator Alkali emphasized the need for a lasting solution to prevent derailments and restore public confidence in the railway system.
The committee will be chaired by Musa O. Ibrahim, Director overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary (DOOPST). Other members include:
- Prof. Danwaka Shuaibu, Senior Technical Adviser (HMT)
- Engr. Zirra Finbar, Director of Rail Transport Services (RTS)
- Barr. Omotola Olusegun, Director of Legal Services (Secretary)
- Dr. Kayode Opeifa, Managing Director, Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC)
- Engr. I.A. Ebuniwe, Railway Inspector
- Representative of Technics Engineering Architecture Marketing Nig. Ltd
- Representative of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC)
- Representative of Civil Society Organization
- A male passenger representative
- A female passenger representative
According to the ministry, the committee is expected to submit its findings and recommendations within a specified timeframe to guide the federal government in strengthening railway operations and passenger safety.
