The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, has joined millions of Nigerians in mourning the passing of the revered Awujale of Ijebu Land, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, GCON.
In a heartfelt condolence message, Senator Tinubu extended her sympathies to the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, the royal family, Oloris, children, grandchildren, and the entire Ijebu people, describing the late monarch as “a great king whose wisdom, dignity, and devotion to the Ijebu heritage will remain etched in history.”
She hailed Oba Adetona as a bridge between generations, a monarch who upheld tradition while embracing progressive ideals for the development of his people. According to her, the late Awujale’s 65-year reign reflected visionary leadership, astute understanding of his people’s needs, and a lifelong commitment to their well-being.
“Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona stood as a symbol of tradition, stability, and progress. His reign brought pride and growth to the Ijebu Kingdom and will never be forgotten,” the First Lady stated.
As an indigene of the land, Senator Tinubu noted that she shares in the pain of the people of Ijebu Land, emphasizing that the grief is not only theirs but that of all Nigerians who held the monarch in high esteem.
She prayed for the peaceful repose of the monarch’s soul and for comfort to be granted to the royal family, the Council of Chiefs, and the entire Ijebu community.
Oba Adetona ascended the throne in 1960 and until his passing, was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers.
