Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the death of the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed on at the age of 91.
The revered monarch, who ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, reigned for over 64 years, making him one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in Nigerian history.
His death was confirmed on Saturday, July 13, 2025, by Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, through a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
“With deep sorrow, we announce the transition of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, who joined his ancestors today, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91,” the governor stated.
“This sad development, coinciding with the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, marks a profound loss not just for Ogun State, but for the entire nation.”
Oba Adetona was widely respected for his wisdom, courage, and commitment to the development of Ijebuland. Under his leadership, the kingdom witnessed tremendous cultural, infrastructural, and economic growth. His efforts in promoting the annual Ojude Oba festival elevated it to international recognition, while his contributions to education and health care earned him admiration across the country.
Governor Abiodun described the late monarch as “a symbol of unity, wisdom, and development,” adding that his legacy would remain etched in the hearts of the people.
“We honour his remarkable contributions and pray that his soul finds eternal rest,” he said.
