In a stunning political move, former Kaduna State governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP)after citing irreconcilable differences with the party’s leadership.
El-Rufai, a founding member of the APC, submitted his resignation letter to his ward in Kaduna on Monday, expressing disappointment over the party’s deviation from democratic principles.
“I have diligently served the APC and contributed to its viability, but recent developments show a troubling disregard for the progressive values I hold dear,” he said.
He emphasized his key role in securing APC’s victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023, but noted that his political journey now requires a new platform.
El-Rufai’s switch to the SDP comes after high-profile meetings in Lagos with former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola and influential cleric Pastor Tunde Bakare, sparking speculations about a broader political realignment.
“As a member of the SDP, I am committed to building a strong alternative to challenge the APC in the upcoming elections,” he declared, urging like-minded Nigerians to join him in reshaping the country’s future.
