A newlywed couple, returning to the mainland from the Ikoyi Marriage Registry, narrowly escaped tragedy following a serious vehicular collision on the Third Mainland Bridge near Ilaje, heading towards Iyana Oworonsoki.
The couple, alongside 16 others, was rescued in a coordinated operation led by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and emergency response agencies.
The accident, which involved a mini truck (AGL 22 YE) and a commercial LT bus (BFG 204 XF), was caused by a brake failure on the LT bus, which was traveling at excessive speed.
The bus subsequently rammed into the mini truck, which was moving slowly due to mechanical difficulties.
In total, 18 individuals were involved in the crash. The newlyweds, along with 16 others—11 women and 5 men—sustained significant injuries.
While the couple was safely evacuated, the passengers in the rear of the LT bus were swiftly transported to the Lagos State Trauma and Emergency Centre near the Toll Gate for urgent medical attention.
Two passengers seated at the front of the LT bus were trapped in the wreckage and suffered severe fractures to their limbs.
They were extricated through the combined efforts of LASTMA officials, emergency responders, and concerned bystanders before being rushed to Gbagada General Hospital for specialized treatment.
The Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASABUS) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Unit (LRU) facilitated the swift evacuation of all casualties to medical facilities, while law enforcement officers from Alonge Police Station and the Lagos State Task Force ensured security and order during the rescue operation.
Speaking on the incident, LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended heartfelt sympathy to the injured, including the newlywed couple, wishing them a speedy recovery.
He also reiterated the importance of observing speed limits and maintaining vehicles in optimal condition, particularly the braking system, to prevent such tragedies.
Mr. Bakare-Oki further highlighted LASTMA’s intensified public enlightenment campaigns, led by its Female Elite Corps, aimed at educating motorists—especially commercial bus operators—on safe driving practices during and beyond the festive season.
The public is reminded to report traffic incidents, emergencies, or road obstructions by contacting LASTMA’s toll-free hotline at 0800000527862 for immediate assistance.
