The Lagos State Government has rolled out an extensive traffic control and safety framework to guarantee uninterrupted movement along the Lekki–Epe Expressway as rehabilitation works commence on the 20-kilometre stretch of the critical corridor.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, made this known while briefing officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), assuring motorists that the expressway will remain open throughout the 64-day construction period.

Giwa explained that rather than shutting down the road, traffic management efforts would be concentrated at identified pressure points and intersections to ensure minimal disruption and sustained vehicular flow.
To effectively manage traffic during the exercise, the state government has deployed over 305 LASTMA operatives across three operational zones along the corridor. The phased deployment, he noted, is designed to enhance traffic regulation, improve response time to incidents and maintain order on the busy route.
According to the Special Adviser, the Lekki–Epe axis has experienced a significant surge in traffic volume due to intensified commercial and industrial activities, driven by major developments such as the Lekki Deep Sea Port, Lekki Free Trade Zone and the Dangote Refinery.
“In anticipation of traffic-related emergencies, LASTMA has stationed a fleet of recovery vehicles, including tow trucks of varying capacities, to swiftly clear broken-down vehicles and prevent avoidable gridlock,” Giwa said.

He also revealed that the agency will deploy drone-enabled surveillance to monitor traffic conditions in real time, allowing for early detection of incidents and prompt intervention, not only on the Lekki–Epe Expressway but across other key routes in Lagos.
As part of the safety measures, Giwa disclosed that clear directional signage, improved lighting and other essential road safety features have been incorporated into the traffic management architecture for the duration of the rehabilitation.
To further strengthen enforcement and security, personnel from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS)and Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) have been mobilised to support LASTMA operations, ensuring the protection of road users and public infrastructure.
Motorists were advised to reduce pressure on the construction corridor by utilising alternative routes, particularly the Coaster Road linking Ogombo and Abraham Adesanya, which has been designated as a preferred option during the rehabilitation period.
Giwa appealed to road users to exercise patience, obey traffic regulations and cooperate fully with traffic officials, stressing that public compliance remains critical to the success of the project.
He also urged motorists to promptly report any traffic challenges through the LASTMA toll-free line: 080000527862, assuring residents of swift and coordinated response.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its appeal for public understanding and cooperation, describing the Lekki–Epe Expressway rehabilitation as a strategic investment aimed at improving mobility, enhancing road safety and supporting sustained economic growth in the state.
