The lawmaker representing Rano/ Kibiya/ Bunkure Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Kabiru Rurum, has distanced himself from Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s faction of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), aligning instead with the camp led by the party’s founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam.
Rurum, former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, asserted that the NNPP under Dr. Aniebonam—symbolized by a fruit logo—represents the party’s authentic leadership, dismissing Kwankwaso’s faction, which operates under a book logo.
He also encouraged Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to assert his authority independently, assuring Kano residents of his loyalty to the governor’s vision for the state.
Refuting rumors of defection, Rurum declared his loyalty to the NNPP under Dr. Aniebonam’s leadership, criticizing Kwankwaso for allegedly attempting to hijack the party. “Dr. Boniface provided Kwankwaso with a platform; it is wrong to take the party from him and treat him poorly,” he stated.
In a related move, the member representing Dala Federal Constituency exited the Kwankwasiyya movement, urging supporters to abandon the red cap, Kwankwasiyya’s signature symbol.
This shift follows a ruling from the Uzuakoli Division of the High Court in Abia State, where Justice C.U. Okoroafor ordered that the NNPP be placed under the control of its Board of Trustees, chaired by Dr. Aniebonam.
The court’s November 1, 2024, ruling comes amid rising tensions over the party’s leadership.
