As the countdown to the 2027 general elections begins, former Kano State Governor and presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, alongside his New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), is actively weighing strategic political options.
Reliable sources within the party disclosed that the Kwankwasiyya movement is considering aligning with either the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or a potential coalition being spearheaded by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, and other key opposition figures.
“What I can confirm is that Kwankwaso and the NNPP will not be going solo in 2027 as they did in the last election,” the source revealed. “They are seriously exploring the prospects of either joining forces with Tinubu’s APC or partnering with the Atiku-led opposition bloc.”
NNPP’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, confirmed that these political realignments are indeed under consideration.
He stated, “In the NNPP, particularly as a movement rooted in Kwankwasiyya, we traditionally hold off on major decisions until the midterm. That’s May 29th—two years into the current administration, two years left to go. That’s when real politicking begins.”
Johnson acknowledged ongoing political consultations but declined to name the groups involved. “We’ve been talking, yes. But I won’t name names just yet.
“There’s been plenty of speculation—some say Senator Kwankwaso is on the verge of joining the APC. That’s just part of the political game. People float those narratives for their own reasons,” he said.
He added that the party is evaluating three key paths ahead: “Either we stay in the NNPP and consolidate with our existing allies, form a coalition with Atiku and others, or enter an alliance with the ruling APC. Those are the cards on the table, but nothing is decided yet.”
A formal announcement is expected once internal consultations conclude and midterm politicking officially begins.
