A pro-democracy and human right organization, Speak Out 24/7, has expressed optimism that with Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu heading the Campaign Council of the All Progressive Congress (APC), for the July 16, governorship election in Osun State, the victory for the party is a forgone conclusion.
Convener of the group, Comrade Adekunle Adeosun, in a telephone conversation with our correspondent Friday, said, winning Osun State for the APC would not be the first task that Sanwo-Olu would accomplished reminding that, he performed same feat in Ondo State during the second term bid of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu in Ondo State.
According to him, the performances and achievements of Sanwo-Olu in Lagos State since 2019 would ginger the people of Osun State to vote Governor Isiaka Gboyega Oyetola for a second term in office because of his performance that is also similar to that of Sanwo-Olu, enthusing that Osun governorship poll on July 16 would just be a walk-over.
Recall that, on Tuesday, Governor Sanwo-Olu was appointed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to head the party’s 86-member National Campaign Council for the July 16 governorship election in Osun State.
According to a statement from the Chief Press Secretary (CPS), to the Governor, Gboyega Akosile via a statement issued on Wednesday added that, while Sanwo-Olu will chair the campaign council, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano) and Abubakar Sani Bello (Niger), will serve as co-chairman and deputy chairman respectively.
The statement jointly signed by APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu and party’s National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore, further disclose that; “The list of the 86-member APC National Campaign Council for the Osun governorship election, (which was inaugurated Thursday at the APC national headquarters in Abuja), was released on Tuesday through a statement jointly signed by APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu and party’s National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore, said the list” comprises serving and former governors, ministers, members of the National Assembly, political appointees and APC chieftains across the country.”
The terms of reference given to the Sanwo-Olu-led APC National Campaign Council include working for the victory of APC and the party’s gubernatorial candidate in Osun State, Governor Isiaka Gboyega Oyetola, who is seeking re-election for a second term in office.
According to Adeosun, the inclusion of the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN), among others as a member of the Council has made the job of winning Osun for the APC doubly sure, saying, “as far as we are concerned in our organization, the calibre of the Council’s member appear an overkill!”
The right activist and pro-democracy crusader who likened the composition of the Campaign Council under the leadership of Sanwo-Olu as using a sledge hammer to kill an ordinary mosquito, asserting that, half of the Council members could have been sufficient to do the going by the performance of Governor Oyetola himself since his assumption of power in 2018.
He however is of the conviction that, in politics like in any other human endeavours, carelessness, complacency as well as underrating of opponents can be very dangerous and counter-productive, believing that, “it is not over until it is properly and positively over.”
