From all indications, it does look like the power brokers within the APC have decided to zone the Party’s presidential ticket to the North and the strong cabals in the presidency have also zeroed in on a particular individual as the anointed candidate of the Party. In this connection, the name of the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, has been a constant denominator.
Our investigations have revealed that the Party may likely decide on consensus arrangement rather than delegates voting at a presidential primary of the Party.
It is said that APC does not want to play into the main opposition Party’s hands should it pick a strong Northern candidate which is likely to be Alhaji Abubakar Atiku. The Party’s leadership reasoned that a strong Northern candidate like Atiku would trump any Southern candidate. Therefore, the Party decided to field a Northern candidate and Lawan fits the bill on all considerations.
The Aso Villa cabal has allegedly perfected plans to ensure that all other aspirants are either convinced to step down or forced to. Anti graft agencies are said to have been ordered to compile robust dossiers of corrupt practices with evidence of humongous corruption against all the aspirants most of whom have skeletons in their cupboards. Should anyone of them prove stubborn, the security agencies would be unleashed on them and such may end up in ignominious prosecution and even imprisonment.
The hardest nut to crack for the cabal so far is the Party’s national leader and former Governor of Lagos State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is said to be ready to fight dirty should any attempt be made to get him to step down for a preferred candidate. There are unconfirmed speculations that he has already mapped out exit plans from the APC to contest under another political Party. Buy another source claims that he will not leave APC but give it a fight of his life to get the Party’s ticket.
While the president has not categorically assured any of the aspirants of his support, he is said to have given his blessing to the Lawan project. Various sources claim that the president is comfortable with a Lawan candidacy because of his loyalty and maturity.
Lawan has been seen flying around with a presidential jet as he moves around the country in his consultations with Party stakeholders and delegates. It has also been observed that security around him has been beefed up- a sign that he is actually being seen as the next Commander-in-Chief. Except there is a very strong resistance to his candidacy, Lawan seems to have landed this one.
How all these will play out is left to be seen in about a week’s time at the Party’s presidential Primary.
