Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stirred reactions after jokingly telling comedian Isbae U that some of the biggest names in Nigeria’s entertainment industry are not important enough for him to know.
Obasanjo made the remark during an appearance on Isbae U’s popular podcast, Curiosity Made Me Ask, in an episode released on Saturday, September 19.
The former president was put through a series of questions about his familiarity with prominent entertainers, including Carter Efe, Poco Lee and Don Jazzy.
When Isbae U asked if he knew Carter Efe, Obasanjo simply replied, “I don’t know.”
The same response followed when he was asked about Poco Lee.
However, when Don Jazzy’s name came up, Obasanjo reacted with an amused, “Ha.”
The exchange soon turned into a playful back-and-forth, with Obasanjo noting that the comedian appeared to know people who were unfamiliar to him.
“So, you know people that… that I don’t know,” he said.
When Isbae U suggested that the entertainers might know Obasanjo even if he did not know them, the former president delivered the punchline.
“Ah, well, maybe because they no be important people, that’s why. That’s why the people you know, I don’t know,” he joked.
Obasanjo then contrasted the entertainers with some of the prominent international figures he has encountered, citing the late Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III.
“Now I tell you, I know Queen Elizabeth. You say you don’t know Queen Elizabeth,” he told Isbae U.
He subsequently asked the comedian if he knew King Charles, to which Isbae U replied that he had heard of him.
“I know him,” Obasanjo responded.
The humorous exchange came during a wider conversation in which Isbae U spoke about his international audience, while Obasanjo teased him about having viewers in countries such as the UK and US despite not having travelled to those destinations.
