Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has tendered his resignation, citing health concerns. His exit from the cabinet takes immediate effect.
In a letter addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and dated December 1, Abubakar explained that his decision was driven by medical advice. President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed appreciation for Badaru’s dedication and contributions to national service.
A new nominee for the Defence Ministry is expected to be communicated to the Senate later this week.
Badaru, 63, previously served two terms as governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before being appointed to the federal cabinet on August 21, 2023.
His departure comes at a time the President has declared a national security emergency, with further details on the government’s strategy expected to be outlined soon.
