President Bola Tinubu has commended the National Assembly for its swift and patriotic ratification of the State of Emergency proclamation in Rivers State, describing it as a crucial step toward restoring stability in the crisis-hit region.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised the lawmakers for prioritizing the security and welfare of Rivers residents over partisan interests.
The President acknowledged the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and other legislators for their diligent review of classified security briefings that underscored the urgency of intervention.
“The crisis in Rivers State was at a perilous tipping point, threatening the security of vital oil and gas installations and undermining the national economy and the significant progress we have made in the reforms initiated since our administration commenced in May 2023,” Tinubu stated.
He emphasized that the near-total collapse of governance in the state, coupled with threats to federal economic assets and escalating violence, necessitated immediate action.
“This emergency measure is a lifeline to safeguard livelihoods, secure critical infrastructure, and restore democratic accountability,” he added.
Tinubu assured that the six-month emergency rule would empower the newly appointed Sole Administrator to restore order, address governance breakdowns, and facilitate reconciliation among warring factions.
Reaffirming his commitment to collaboration with the National Assembly, the President said, “Today’s decision exemplifies what our nation can achieve when unity of purpose and patriotism guide the actions of leaders. We remain steadfast in pursuing a safer, more prosperous Nigeria—one where every citizen’s potential is safeguarded and nurtured.”
He also urged all stakeholders to support efforts to restore peace in Rivers State and thanked Nigerians for their understanding during the crisis.
