Valentine Ozigbo has revealed that Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) candidate in the 2023 presidential election, is unlikely to contest again on the party’s platform.
Ozigbo, a close ally of Obi and a member of the Obidient Movement, resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2022 to join LP in support of Obi’s presidential bid. However, on February 19, he defected from LP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing his strong commitment to a broader vision for the state.
In his resignation letter, the Anambra governorship aspirant stated that he informed Obi of his decision as a “mark of deep respect” for his leadership.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television on Thursday, Ozigbo disclosed that he has witnessed multiple behind-the-scenes discussions regarding political party coalitions.
“I don’t see a future for the Labour Party. I’m happy to stand by that assertion, and I would like to be proven wrong,” he said.
“Peter Obi, whom we are discussing, previously moved from ANPP to APGA, then to PDP, and later to Labour Party. I can almost guarantee that if he decides to run for election again, it won’t be under Labour Party. I can almost guarantee that.
“I am not his spokesperson—perhaps I am wrong—but I have been privy to many discussions about coalitions, and that has shaped my perspective.”
Reflecting on his time in the PDP, Ozigbo acknowledged that under Uche Secondus’ leadership, the party conducted a “fair and transparent” primary election. However, he noted that leadership changes later disrupted internal dynamics, affecting the party’s performance.
