Valentine Ozigbo, a governorship aspirant in Anambra State, has joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), less than a day after resigning from the Labour Party (LP).
Ozigbo officially became an APC member on Thursday, alongside Nze Afam Okpalauzuegbu, the former LP secretary, at their ward in Amesi, Anambra State.
The former Transnational Corporation of Nigeria (Transcorp) CEO resigned from the LP on Wednesday, stating that his decision aligns with his broader vision for the state.
Ozigbo previously contested the 2021 Anambra governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but lost to Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). When he declared his intention to run in the 2024 governorship election, he said his goal was to “save the state from collapse.”
Reacting to Ozigbo’s defection, Bashir Ahmad, former special assistant on digital communications to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, predicted that opposition party structures in Nigeria would weaken before 2027.
“We welcome Valentine Ozigbo to our great party, the All Progressives Congress. It is now clear that even before the time of the actual battle, all the formations of the opposing sides will disappear,” Ahmad wrote on X.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the Anambra governorship election for November.
