Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat to Rwanda in their final Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group D qualifier on Monday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Despite taking the lead through Samuel Chukwueze in the 59th minute, Nigeria’s defense crumbled as Aimable Mutinzi and Imanishimwe Nshuti scored in quick succession to secure a historic victory for the underdogs.
While the loss shocked fans, it had no impact on Nigeria’s qualification for AFCON 2025 in Morocco.
The Super Eagles finished top of the group with 11 points, ahead of Benin, who also qualified. Rwanda, despite their heroic win, missed out on goal difference.
Libya rounded off the group in last place with 5 points.
