The Nigerian Navy has been described as a strategic enabler for poverty eradication, particularly through the vast potential of the blue economy.
First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, made this statement at the launch of two High Endurance Offshore Patrol Vessels in Turkey.
The First Lady emphasized that the 76-meter vessels are a testament to the Tinubu Administration’s commitment to creating a more secure maritime environment for economic development.
She further stated, “The acquisition of the High Endurance Offshore Patrol Vessels is another achievement in the Tinubu administration’s commitment to renewing the Nigerian Navy’s fleet, thereby ensuring a more secure maritime environment for Nigeria’s economic prosperity.”
Acknowledging the significance of the occasion, the First Lady commended Dearsan Shipyard for their high-quality shipbuilding capability and for reaching this milestone in launching the second Offshore Patrol Vessel.
She expressed confidence that the gathering would strengthen the relationship between the Nigerian Navy and the shipyard, as well as between the Nigerian and Turkish Governments.
Earlier, Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Mohammed Mattawalle, expressed optimism that the newly launched vessels would enhance the nation’s maritime sector.
He praised the dedication and commitment of the Nigerian Navy to securing territorial waters and improving the blue economy, noting the significant impact these vessels would have on their activities.
Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Oglala, highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerian Navy personnel and his determination to provide all necessary resources to enhance their effectiveness, ultimately leading to reduced maritime crimes.
In their remarks, Deputy Minister of Defence, Suay Alpay, and Secretary of Defence, Haluk Gorgun, emphasized the potential for increased cooperation with Nigeria not only in security matters but also in economic development.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu then performed the age-old tradition of launching the ship into the water, a task typically carried out by an eminent lady.
The two Offshore Patrol vessels are both 76.90 meters in length, with a beam of 11.90 meters and the capacity to accommodate 47 crew members.
