President Bola Tinubu has extended congratulations to Bassirou Faye on his projected victory as Senegal’s president-elect.
Tinubu’s well-wishes were conveyed in a statement issued on Wednesday by Ajuri Ngelale, the presidential spokesperson.
Although the official results are pending, preliminary tallies indicate a lead for Faye.
In anticipation of the official declaration, opposition figures such as Amadou Ba, former prime minister and the ruling coalition’s presidential candidate, along with Senegalese citizens, have already offered their congratulations to the 44-year-old Faye.
Tinubu praised Faye’s potential and exemplary track record, expressing hopes for his success in his forthcoming role.
Furthermore, the president commended Macky Sall, the outgoing Senegalese leader, for overseeing an election widely regarded as peaceful and transparent.
Originally scheduled for February 25, Senegal’s election was postponed by Sall, a decision that sparked unrest in the nation.
The opposition interpreted Sall’s move as an effort to extend his tenure beyond the constitutional limit, despite his pledge not to seek a third term.
Tinubu asserted that the recent successful presidential elections in Senegal and Liberia affirm his longstanding belief in the firm establishment of democracy in West Africa.
In his capacity as chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Tinubu highlighted the significance of Senegal’s orderly electoral process in bolstering the regional organization’s mission to promote peace, uphold constitutional order, and foster closer ties among member states.
Tinubu conveyed his congratulations to the people of Senegal and assured them of Nigeria’s steadfast support and best wishes.
