Not less than 300 families have benefitted from the Free distribution of Food Box and other consumables by a Non-Governmental Organisation known as the Foodclique Support Initiative at Shitta roundabout in Surulere area of Lagos State.
The gesture by the group was in the spirit of the Sallah celebrations towards ensuring that no one is left behind in the festivities.
The joy expressed by the beneficiaries no no bound when the vehicle conveying the items including the Food Box, portions of Sallah meat and bread arrived at the scene to put to rest some doubting Thomases.
While speaking with newsmen, the the Head of Partnership and Communications, Oladejo Olasunkanmi said the group founded over 12 years ago had distributed food and other items to over fifteen million Nigerians across sixteen states of the Federation including the festive periods like Ramadan, Sallah and Christmas.
He said the exercise was more important at this period because of the recent removal of fuel subsidy which had made prices of food and other regular items go beyond the reach of the masses.
According to him, the Foodclique Support Initiative covers at least ten states every year through their interventions but they are in Surulere for the first time expressing their desire to embark on such distribution next year simultaneously in different locations across the country.
He said the challenge of hunger and poverty among the people cannot be solved by government alone while thanking Eric Kayser, PepsiCo, Noella Foundation and Leky Mills for their support over the years.
Oladejo Olasunkanmi noted that the group is open to collaboration with government, spirited individuals and groups towards reaching out to more Nigerinas facing the scourge of hunger.
He believes that hunger could makes people to become vulnerable to societal ills adding that it buttress the regular saying that” hungry man is an angry man”.
Responding to question on whether the Foodclique Support Initiative is fulfilled with what it had achieved so far, Oladejo Olasunkanmi said they have done well but there is room for improvement since they have more grounds to cover.
He appealed to the people to be patient and support government even in the face of the current hardship believing that Nigerians will have more time to enjoy for their perseverance in the long run.
