David Adeleke and Ayo Balogun, who are popularly known by their stage names as Davido and WizKid respectively, are undisputedly referred so as the GOATs (Greatest of all time) of Afrobeats in Nigeria. With a wide range of fans and social media followers all over the world, they have both distinguished themselves as the biggest and most influential performers in Nigeria.
While the argument continues for fans, analysts and major stakeholders in the industry, there has not been a clear conclusion on who is bigger and greater than the other. For the past ten years, these two have been producing hit songs on a regular basis. Being a fan of the both has put me in a situation where, to others who support either, I do not show traits (by my choice of supporting both) of a true fan or music lover. A lot of these people tend to disagree with me when I say I love them both. “You can’t be a 30BG and WizKid FC at a time”, is the response I get almost everytime.
Fascinatingly, I make people realize that there is absolutely no crime in loving the both of them. To me, they are both talented, famous and are doing perfectly well in the music industry. Davido’s music gives me so much vibes and energy to dance while Wizkid’s on the other hand, runs through my head. To put it in simple terms; Davido is more of vibes while WizKid is more of lyrics.
A few years ago, these artistes used to be friends.They basically supported each other, dance to each other’s music openly and performed at one another’s concerts. Just like the saying goes; “twenty children cannot play for twenty years”, I guess fame and stardom comes with a lot of adjustments which made them drift apart. They relatively gave an assumption of them being enemies afterwards. We never truly got to know what caused the whole rivalry.
Although, the fact that they were no longer friends did not stop them from listening to each other’s songs. I have seen a video of Davido vibing to Wizkid’s music and vice versa. This literally demonstrates an impression of “even if we are no longer friends, there is no harm in listening to your songs”.
Seemingly, the die-hard fans of these artistes are also making matters worse, most especially the toxic ones. They fuel things up on social media with a lot of insultive tweets and posts comparing the artistes on who is better. Whenever Wizkid releases a new song or album, some fans of Davido are always quick to condemn, even if the song is exceptional. The same goes for Wizkid’s fans which is not supposed to be so.
In year 2022, Wizkid was nominated for a Grammy award while Davido was not. This led to an uproar among the fans of the artistes on social media. Before the event, Wizkid’s fans were posting insultive tweets, saying Wizkid is an international artiste while Davido is a local champion. Unfortunately, WizKid lost the award and this caused another stir on social media. Davido’s fans began to mock WizKid for losing. They posted so many offensive memes and Wizkid’s fans justified themselves by saying, “a nomination is still a win”.
Recently, Wizkid posted about a project he and Davido have been working on which will be executed soon. Some fans were happy about it while others were not. I also saw several posts of people saying; even if Wizkid and Davido become bestfriends that does not mean 30BG and Wizkid FC will be united.“Who is the problem now”?
I will round this off by stating that everybody has a right to their opinion which is perfectly fine. I would just like to make everyone realize that there is no point for the unnecessary comparisons. These artistes are doing excellently well in the music and entertainment industry as a whole. It is alright to love Davido more than WizKid and vice versa. There’s also no crime in not liking one of them, even in the slightest bit but condemnation on the basis of hate is improper.
Frankly, these artistes don’t even know majority of their fans personally so there is no need for the pointless arguments about them. At the end of the day, they are both called the GOATs.
