A pro-Labour group, the Labour & Workers Welfare Advocacy Center, has thrown its weight behind the honourable Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola over his theory about maintenance economy.
Fashola, in his report before the Council of State was quoted to have said that, there are still other things to be done after building the infrastructure which he termed as Maintenance Economy and not maintenance culture, saying, maintenance would prolong the life span of the projects and give the country real value for its money.
Comrade Omobanke Razak, the group’s Convener in a media chat in Lagos weekend said, Fashola’s submission made a lot of sense to him, pointing out that, it is when the infrastructure is slated for maintenance that more people would be employ and thus give food tpo the tables of the family.
Omobanke referred to the portion of Fashola’s reports that said, it was when we want the projects live longer that many people would be employed to work for a longer period of time on them, saying, that is the aspect that mostly concerns his organization.
According to the youthful activist, Fashola cannot be disputed when he disclosed that, when the projects we employ workers to build is complete, their works at the juncture has come to an end, agreeing with the Minister that, what would not terminate is maintenance that would need more people to carry out.
The group leader, who reasoned that, if the country wants to clear the youth off the streets, maintenance economy, the gospel according to Fashola is the panacea, reasoning that, such would serve dual purposes of providing means of livelihood and at the same reduce the crime tendencies as idle hands serve as devil’s workshop.
The group therefore urged the Federal Government to make adequate funds available for the Ministry of Works and Housing for the purpose of maintenance the laudable infrastructure it has built across the country, assuring that, “Fashola and his team are capable of doing a very good job on maintenance.
Concluding, the Centre also urged the citizenry to assist the authorities in the job of the maintenance of the infrastructure saying, sustainability of the country’s projects is supposed to be the responsibility of all and sundry.
