A pan ethnic pro-democracy group, Yoruba Radical Assembly (YRA), has said it would resist vehemently, any attempt to hide under the genuine on-going protest against police brutality in the country to incite the public to truncate democracy in Nigeria, vowing to resist such with last blood in its members’ veins.
The National Convener of the group Comrade Omolola Oriade, in a statement in Lagos Friday warned that anybody toying with the idea of provoking the Military to come back would have himself to blame asserting that, any attempt towards such undemocratic venture would be met with strong resistance to protect the nascent democracy in the country.
According to the youthful convener, the Nigerian youth would neither tolerate nor allow any undesirable elements in the society to truncate the current democratic experiment that was planted with the blood of compatriots and being nurtured with the sweat of die-hard democrats to be truncated by anybody no matter how highly placed in the society.
“We know how hard we fought to bring about the current democratic experience we are all enjoying today. And we will not open our eyes to allow some unscrupulous characters within us to bring us back to square one and make the country a pariah in the comity of nations. The respect the country is enjoying globally today through our democracy would not be allowed to short live,” the group stated emphatically.
The statement further explained that, the protest by the youth across the nation was aimed at admonishing the authorities to ensure good governance that would guarantee better life for all and sundry, emphasising that the protest was not to bring down the government or incite the military to stage a comeback into the polity.
While commending the protesters’ exhibition of high standard of maturity and civility, the group also praised the authorities for taking steps to address the grievances of the youth by looking into their demands, enthusing that, at the end of the day, the whole country would be better for it when rough edges of the polity are smoothened out.
Concluding, the group lauded the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola (BOS), for identifying with the youth and listening to their demands, adding that, “taking great pains to take the protesters’ letter of demands to Abuja stands him out as a reliable administrator.”
