The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has launched a major crackdown on suspected criminal hideouts across Abuja, arresting about 300 people during coordinated raids on crime-prone areas, shanties and uncompleted buildings.
The operation, conducted on Saturday, September 19, 2026, targeted locations identified as potential centres of criminal activity as part of efforts to disrupt crime and strengthen security across the territory.
Police said officers recovered several items during the raids, including knives, a toy gun, cannabis and other illicit substances.
The suspects are currently undergoing screening and profiling by the command. Those found to have cases to answer will be charged to court, while those cleared after the exercise will be released.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, PhD, FCAI, said the command would sustain intelligence-led raids and proactive operations aimed at preventing criminal activities before they escalate.
Sanusi also warned persons without legitimate business or means of livelihood in the FCT to return to their respective states of origin or risk repatriation.
According to the police, some of those arrested had been occupying uncompleted buildings and allegedly posing as scavengers while engaging in activities including phone snatching and breaking into parked vehicles.
The commissioner also cautioned residents against illicit drug use, noting that substance abuse could impair judgment, fuel violent crime and expose communities to security risks.
He urged individuals struggling with substance abuse to seek counselling and rehabilitation, while calling on residents to provide timely and credible information about suspicious activities and suspected criminal hideouts.
The command urged members of the public to use its emergency and tip-off line, 08032003913, to report suspicious activities.
