Renowned Yoruba actor Charles Sanyaolu, fondly known as Agbako, has passed away at the age of 101.
The president of the Theatre Arts and Movie Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), Bolaji Amusan, shared the news of Agbako’s passing on Instagram, stating, “TAMPAN Global announces the passing of Pa Charles Olumo Sanyaolu, fondly known as AGBAKO.”
Amusan noted that details of the burial arrangements would be shared at a later time.
Agbako was a beloved figure in the Yoruba film industry, known for his powerful stage presence and memorable performances.
Born in 1923, Sanyaolu was one of the foundational figures of the Yoruba film industry, which eventually became part of Nollywood.
He gained fame for his roles in traditional Yoruba films, where he often portrayed intimidating characters, including villains, warriors, and chiefs.
His talent for playing strong, challenging roles made him a household name. His career spanned several decades, allowing him to collaborate with many actors and filmmakers.
In the early stages of his career, Yoruba theatre and film were limited to stage plays and local performances.
However, as the industry transitioned into film and television, Agbako adapted seamlessly, becoming one of the most recognized faces in Yoruba cinema.
His roles in iconic films such as Ogbori Elemosho and Atorunmo solidified his legendary status in the industry.
